Case Study — Ayzz / ZZ Agency

Scaling a Design Creator

The creator had strong insights and design skills but struggled to retain attention and package their knowledge into highly engaging videos. The goal was to establish authority in the design niche while rapidly growing an engaged audience from scratch.

By leveraging motion design, snappy pacing, and deep SEO strategy, we identified a massive gap in the market for high-retention educational content.

01. The Roadmap

Project Timeline

September 2023

Joined Ayzz Team

Started as a basic short-form editor to test working dynamics.

October 2023

YouTube Launch Strategy

Analyzed competitor gaps and architected the format for long-form educational design videos.

November 2023

First Viral Hit

The 3D Scroll Tutorial broke algorithm expectations, driving the first major subscriber spike.

Present

Monetized & Scaling

Passed 570K+ views across the channel, fully dominating the targeted design niche.

02. Philosophy

The Editing Playbook

Pacing Over Everything

Every 3–5 seconds something must change visually or audibly. The modern viewer's baseline attention is fragile, so retention graphs dictate the edit.

Hooks Are Edited Last

The first 5 seconds define the video's success. I edit the entire body first, then extract the most potent visual and audio cues to construct a high-retention hook.

Motion Reinforces Story

Motion graphics aren't just for decoration. Every animated element is specifically designed to clarify a technical concept that audio alone cannot explain.

03. Execution

The 5-Step Workflow

How a raw recording becomes a high-retention asset.

01

Footage Triage & A-Cut

Removing dead air, stumbles, and tightening the narrative structure before any visuals are added.

02

B-Roll & Visual Evidence

Sourcing and integrating screen recordings, software UI, and examples to prove the points being made.

Screen-recorded B-roll used as visual evidence
03

Custom Motion Graphics

Building After Effects compositions for complex technical breakdowns.

04

Soundscapes

Layering foley, risers, and EQ-balanced music to drive emotional pacing.

05

Analytics Review

Post-publishing analysis of retention graphs to inform the next video's pacing.

04. Technical Breakdown

Inside the Edit

0:45

The Pattern Interrupt

At 0:45, retention usually dips. I added a harsh glitch transition accompanied by a sub-bass drop to force viewers to refocus on the screen.

Throughout

Visual Retention

Instead of relying on the talking head, the UI elements are animated to float towards the camera, mimicking 3D depth and keeping the eye tracking motion.

The Reveal

Pacing the Payoff

The music cuts entirely to dead silence right before the final result is shown, creating a vacuum of tension that makes the reveal hit 10x harder.

05. Iteration

Thumbnail Evolution

A great video dies with a bad thumbnail. Here is how we iterated based on CTR data.

Original Concept
Original thumbnail concept

Too cluttered, text was unreadable on mobile, didn't create a curiosity gap.

Final Concept
Final thumbnail concept

Stripped away unnecessary UI. Increased contrast. Added the bold "3D SCROLL" promise.

Click-through rate

The same video, the same title — only the thumbnail changed.

Original concept3.2%
Final concept8.5%

Both figures are actual measured CTR. Bars are scaled relative to the higher value.

Cumulative Views

Consistent month-over-month growth driven entirely by organic search and suggested videos.

570K 380K 190K 0 Sep '23 Launch + 6mo Today

Start and end points are actual: 0 views at launch, 570K+ today. The curve between them illustrates the shape of growth rather than plotting month-by-month figures.

Beating the Drop-off

By front-loading the value and using aggressive visual pacing in the first 30 seconds, we maintained a 65% retention rate past the crucial 1-minute mark.

Audience Retention Curve

Where most channels lose half their audience in the first minute, the pattern interrupts hold the line.

100% 50% 0% 65% still watching at 1:00 0:00 5:00 End

The marked point — 65% retention at the 1-minute mark — is an actual measured figure. The rest of the curve is illustrative of the typical shape across the channel, not a single video's exact graph.

07. Audience Validation

What They Actually Said

Numbers show reach. Comments show whether the work landed.

“Most editors just make it look good and send it. He actually cares video perform well, thinks about how the video will go viral, suggests ideas.”

08. What Transferred

Three things I'd do again

Edit the hook last You can't write a hook for a video that doesn't exist yet. Cutting the body first tells you what the strongest 5 seconds actually are.
Treat the thumbnail as the product A 3.2% to 8.5% CTR swing on identical footage is the cheapest growth lever available. Iterate on it separately from the edit.
Let the retention graph edit the next video Every dip is a note. Reviewing the curve before starting the next cut turned editing from taste into a feedback loop.
